Abstract

The concept of the metaverse, derived from science fiction and video games, has been defined in various ways, including augmented reality, virtual reality, life logging, and mirror world. These different variants encompass existing realities and technologies, such as extended reality applications, virtual meetings, and smart devices. Despite the initial enthusiasm surrounding Meta’s announcement last year of the ”new” metaverse, there are concerns about its contraction and financial challenges. However, generative AI, exemplified by ChatGPT, has emerged as the trending topic, revolutionizing content generation and improving interactions. with chatbots. Focus has shifted from the metaverse to generative AI, although there are potential intersections between the two technologies. This article looks at the perspective of the educational metaverse, its benefits for learning, and the tools available for teachers at different skill levels, including beginner-level and advanced-level platforms. Generative AI offers opportunities for easier content creation, bridging the gap between beginner and advanced creators through a ”prompt editing” methodology. The article concludes with a case study on developing an XR-based MOOC to teach Italian for foreign students, incorporating gamification elements and leveraging the EON-XR platform and ChatGPT for interactive lessons and put a magnifier on ethical aspects of Metaverse and Generative AI.
