A recent book by Juan Antonio Bueno Delgado focuses on the intricate development of events leading to Justinian’s edict on the ‘Three-Chapters Controversy’. This article aims to present a critical reading of this book and of the historical-legal context of the Controversy. It will be shown that the ‘symphony’ between sacerdotium and imperium, which Bueno Delgado recog- nises in these events, does not emerge in the concrete development of the affair, particularly as regards the relationship between the emperor and the popes.
