In recent years analytic philosophers have developed an intense interest in literature; nonetheless, in this tradition, the reflection on poetry remains little fre- quented and marginal. However, philosophical tools, especially those of the philoso- phy of language, can play an important role. Here I propose a contribution that goes in this direction. Building on Grice’s notion of implicature, I will argue that some important mechanisms at work in poetic texts are pragmatic in nature. They can be interpreted as deliberate violations of reader/listener communicative expectations, as expressed by Grice’s maxims of conversation. Some considerations concerning the aesthetic use of images follow.

Abstract
In recent years analytic philosophers have developed an intense interest in literature; nonetheless, in this tradition, the reflection on poetry remains little fre- quented and marginal. However, philosophical tools, especially those of the philoso- phy of language, can play an important role. Here I propose a contribution that goes in this direction. Building on Grice’s notion of implicature, I will argue that some important mechanisms at work in poetic texts are pragmatic in nature. They can be interpreted as deliberate violations of reader/listener communicative expectations, as expressed by Grice’s maxims of conversation. Some considerations concerning the aesthetic use of images follow.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
