Abstract

Literature from Austria has always been written in different languages, although the visibility and appreciation of this multilingualism is subject to historical change. After the Second World War, the Austrian literary establishment was primarily preoccupied with the search for its own identity, with a focus on German-language literature. It was not until the 1990s that the linguistic richness of Austrian literature - through the autochthonous language minorities, but also through immigrant authors - became more visible and more strongly promoted. This article presents multilingual contemporary literature from Austria against the background of the growing field of literary multilingualism research.
