The paper makes some critical remarks on the last phase of von Wright's (VW) thought on the subject of the logic of norms. Like many of the authors who have long grappled with the argument for the possibility of constructing a genuine logic of norms, VW has worked to slowly develop a sceptical attitude toward this possibility. In the latter part of his career, however, VW argues that logic in the normative realm is based on a triadic relationship between normative authorities, the recipients of norms, and the satisfaction of norms. Although this proposal is highly suggestive, it raises several problems that will be explored in this paper.

Abstract

The paper makes some critical remarks on the last phase of von Wright's (VW) thought on the subject of the logic of norms. Like many of the authors who have long grappled with the argument for the possibility of constructing a genuine logic of norms, VW has worked to slowly develop a sceptical attitude toward this possibility. In the latter part of his career, however, VW argues that logic in the normative realm is based on a triadic relationship between normative authorities, the recipients of norms, and the satisfaction of norms. Although this proposal is highly suggestive, it raises several problems that will be explored in this paper.
