This article presents an overview of Roman carriages during the latter part of the 17th century. It is based on little-known correspondence, dating from 1661 to 1671, between the French Minister Hugues de Lionne and his informants in Rome. The correspondence is now held by the Archives du Ministère des Affaires Étrangères in Paris. The paper offers new research insights into the manufacture, use, and symbolic significance of these vehicles, not only for the history of art but also for the history of society and material culture. It contains examples that include diplomatic gifts of ceremonial coaches, first-hand observations about extraordinary vehicles commissioned by noble households, and priceless family carriages featured in the wills of illustrious noblewomen.
