19th-century English travel writing as a multilingual genre: first observations on multilingual travel writers, multilingual travelogues and multilingual intertextuality

Travel writing often deals with journeys across linguistic boundaries and reports on experiences with other people, other countries, and other cultures. It is thus a genre that seems bound to be multilingual. Still, the multilingualism of travelogues has hitherto hardly been studied. This article attempts to fill this gap and proposes a first analysis of some of the forms and functions of multilingualism in 19th-century travel writing in English. It discusses translingual travel writers, examines forms of manifest multilingualism, and analyzes multilingual intertextuality.
