Abstract

This article aims to investigate the compositional “obsession” manifested by scholars of the Mamluk period and to bring back this phenomenon to a wider and more remote context of competition for the control of cultural and intellectual authority. We will also try to demonstrate how poetic ability constituted an important personal and professional requirement for contemporary ʿulamāʾ as an indispensable “medium of sociability” and a means of affirmation and social inclusion.
