A global phenomenon, such as the current pandemic, produces discussions involving every dimension of life in society: public opinion, the communities of experts, politics, ethics, science. The pandemic has at times raised new issues, at other times highlighted existing. This article attempts to analyze what this experience can teach us about the forms which rationality can assume in public debate. The call for “critical thinking”, put forward by many – also linked to the problem of fake news and the so-called “infodemic” – leads us to ask how this notion should be understood. Emphasizing some aspects little considered in current conceptions of critical thinking, including especially the role of “indirect” knowledge or “knowledge by testimony” in the general system of our cognitions, the article proposes a rethinking that takes into account the complexity of all the forms of rationality at stake, not only the scientific one.
