The essay aims at showing that the Pentekontaetia in the first book of Thucydides’ Histories presents the various events from 479 to 431 BCE not only in retrospect, in order to explain the Athenian auxesis, but also in perspective, as a paradigm of the behaviors that the two sides will adopt in the Peloponnesian War.

Abstract
