Italian poetry took its first steps during the 13th century, when the poets of the “Scuola Siciliana” started translating troubadouresque poems. Notwithstanding, along the centuries, many have branded poetic translation as an impossible task. The emergence of free verse poems, typical of contemporary poetry, reopens the debate on which have to be considered the characteristic elements of the genre. If rhyme and metre are not the poetry's dominant constituents anymore, thence, the translation problems will resemble those of the prose texts. Still, terminological rigour and narrative rhythm represent the genre main cores. Poets and translators' activities, therefore, can be considered akin, to the extent that both face language, looking for the suitable expression and purchasing perfection, yet knowing that their task, though necessary, will still be utopian.

Abstract
Italian poetry took its first steps during the 13th century, when the poets of the “Scuola Siciliana” started translating troubadouresque poems. Notwithstanding, along the centuries, many have branded poetic translation as an impossible task. The emergence of free verse poems, typical of contemporary poetry, reopens the debate on which have to be considered the characteristic elements of the genre. If rhyme and metre are not the poetry's dominant constituents anymore, thence, the translation problems will resemble those of the prose texts. Still, terminological rigour and narrative rhythm represent the genre main cores. Poets and translators' activities, therefore, can be considered akin, to the extent that both face language, looking for the suitable expression and purchasing perfection, yet knowing that their task, though necessary, will still be utopian.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
