It’s been over a decade that the intervention of Guido Bigarelli and his workshop has been recognized in some monumental sculptures of Modena cathedral. The passage of the sculptor, Lombard of origin, and whose career is otherwise entirely Tuscan, in the Emilian centre, has enriched his path with a significant portion, which has not been entirely resolved yet, nor in an individual perspective, meaning in the light of the master’s stylistic evolution, nor from the more complex point of view of the familiar and professional links that bounded the Campionese masters and the building sites they led during the first half of the thirteenth century. The portals of the Cathedral of San Martino in Lucca, which have seen Guido Bigarelli’s leadership for about twenty years (ca. 1238-1257), are thoroughly included in this category. A small addition to the sculptor’s catalogue in Modena offers now the opportunity to resume the lines of a reflection that tries to compose his northern-italian journey within the broader frame of his artistic career.
Da oltre un decennio l’intervento di Guido Bigarelli e della sua bottega è stato riconosciuto in un nucleo di sculture monumentali del duomo di Modena. Il passaggio dello scultore, lombardo di origine, e la cui carriera si svolge per il resto interamente in Toscana, nella città emiliana, ha arricchito il suo percorso di un segmento significativo, che non è ancora stato interamente risolto né in un’ottica individuale, alla luce, cioè, dell’evoluzione stilistica del maestro, né dal più ampio punto di vista dei legami, familiari e professionali, che univano i maestri campionesi e i cantieri da questi condotti nel corso della prima metà del XIII secolo. Nel novero di tali imprese rientra a pieno titolo quella dei portali della cattedrale di San Martino a Lucca, teatro della leadership di Guido Bigarelli per circa un ventennio (ca. 1238-1257). Una piccola aggiunta al catalogo modenese dello scultore offre ora lo spunto per riprendere le fila di una riflessione che tenta di comporre la sua parentesi settentrionale entro la più ampia cornice della sua carriera artistica.
