The Covid-19 emergency has put a strain on the elderly, immediately identified as a group at risk and as the first recipients of containment measures, especially during the lockdown in the first half of 2020. Deep concerns for the psychological health of a population already largely subject to fragility, social vulnerability, and isolation have added to the threat of the virus. This study, conducted in qualitative form through 154 semi-structured interviews with over 65 residents of the Genoese area, describes their experiences during the lockdown, highlighting among multiple and different experiences, how, beyond the most evident critical situations, the identification of the elderly as subjects at risk has increased the self-stigmatization and the replication of improper stereotypes, while, at the same time, has left behind both experiences of profound resilience and situations of extreme vulnerability.

Abstract
The Covid-19 emergency has put a strain on the elderly, immediately identified as a group at risk and as the first recipients of containment measures, especially during the lockdown in the first half of 2020. Deep concerns for the psychological health of a population already largely subject to fragility, social vulnerability, and isolation have added to the threat of the virus. This study, conducted in qualitative form through 154 semi-structured interviews with over 65 residents of the Genoese area, describes their experiences during the lockdown, highlighting among multiple and different experiences, how, beyond the most evident critical situations, the identification of the elderly as subjects at risk has increased the self-stigmatization and the replication of improper stereotypes, while, at the same time, has left behind both experiences of profound resilience and situations of extreme vulnerability.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
