This essay seeks to propose an overview of the specific problem of the evil of violence in Paul Ricoeur’s work in relation to current philosophical debates on suffering and pain. The aim of this paper is to consider the question of evil both as a speculative challenge (paradox of thought) and as an experience which comes from the voluntary action of man (violence). In this respect it shows the need to lead an ethical and political opposition to evil by discussing the concept of pain as the suffering that results from a crime. Ricoeur suggests introducing a new model of criminal justice which can replicate evil without adding to the further suffering of violent punishment.
