This essay aims primarily at literary scholars, among whom a distrust of Translation Theory (TT) based on prejudices and misunderstandings too often prevails. Some confuse “theory” with “history” and/or regard linguistics with arbitrary and anachronistic hostility. We first review the reasons for TT's relatively late introduction into the Italian university. We then argue for the key role played by TT for the acquisition and application of specific skills, strategies, and techniques that are indispensable in translating complex texts. Finally, we present a theoretical model whose patterns are based on a single parameter: f-markedness; the model responds to the four qualities required in any formal/experimental science: parsimony, generality, predictiveness, and consilience.
