Theodor W. Adorno (1903-1969) lived through the twentieth century and witnessed the horrors of totalitarianism. He studied philosophy in Germany, and left his homeland after the ascent of Hitler’s National Socialism. From 1938 to 1949 he lived in exile in the U.S.A., where he collaborated with Horkheimer, director of the Frankfurt Institut für Sozialforschung. In these years he studied the causes and characteristics of totalitarianism and anti-Semitism. He also analyzed American mass democracy and its possible degenerations.

Abstract

Theodor W. Adorno (1903-1969) lived through the twentieth century and witnessed the horrors of totalitarianism. He studied philosophy in Germany, and left his homeland after the ascent of Hitler’s National Socialism. From 1938 to 1949 he lived in exile in the U.S.A., where he collaborated with Horkheimer, director of the Frankfurt Institut für Sozialforschung. In these years he studied the causes and characteristics of totalitarianism and anti-Semitism. He also analyzed American mass democracy and its possible degenerations.
