A new document sheds light on the initial stages of Guido Bigarelli’s career, anticipating the first Lucchese mention, so far set at 1244, to 1238. The text of the act records the loan of a sum of money, a widely practiced and documented activity for Lombard masters in Lucca. While not providing direct indications on the sculptor’s work, the testimony proves valuable from at least two points of view, corroborating the dating of Guido Bigarelli’s intervention on the portals of the cathedral of Lucca at this time, and opening up new research perspectives on the sculptor, attested in the possession of Venetian currency: a possible stay in Venice would constitute a significant stage in Guido Bigarelli’s training, on which there is no certain data, and would allow to better evaluate the Byzantine-style classicism in his works.
