In this article, we investigated on the interest shown by architecture in a regular polygon: the octagon, which represents a mediation between the square and the circle. In order to investigate the image and the spatial meaning of the regular octagon in architecture, we compared monuments from different historical periods as Ancient Roman buildings, Christian baptisteries, Islamic architectures and decorations, Renaissance central plans and Baroque fountains.

Abstract

In this article, we investigated on the interest shown by architecture in a regular polygon: the octagon, which represents a mediation between the square and the circle.
