The subject of our analysis is the role of the pismovnik “Priklady kako pišutsja komplementy raznye" (1708), translated in the foreign policy department (the Diplomatic chancellery) and printed at the behest of Peter I, in the formation of epistolary norms in diplomatic correspondence. Our analysis is based on an examination of the gramoty found in the State Archives of Venice written by Peter I and his heirs (all the way to Catherine II) in the context of prior tradition and of diplomatic relations between the two states.
