The paper aims to challenge the traditional view of Crates as an apolitical and non-topical comic poet. This vision originates from a disputable reading of ancient testimonia (Aristoph. Equ. 537-540 = test. 6; Aristot. Poet. 1449b = test. 5), and builds on out-dated interpretive categories. The radicalization of this prejudice has often prevented the investigation of possible historical hints in Crates’ fragments. An analysis of some titles and fragments suggests a reframe of the case.

Abstract
The paper aims to challenge the traditional view of Crates as an apolitical and non-topical comic poet. This vision originates from a disputable reading of ancient testimonia (Aristoph. Equ. 537-540 = test. 6; Aristot. Poet. 1449b = test. 5), and builds on out-dated interpretive categories. The radicalization of this prejudice has often prevented the investigation of possible historical hints in Crates’ fragments. An analysis of some titles and fragments suggests a reframe of the case.File in questo prodotto:
