This empirical study aims at analyzing data regarding the inclusion of substandard varieties of German in teaching German as a foreign language. The data of the study is based on answers to a set of questions that have been answered by about 50 students enrolled in two bachelor study programs of German language, literature and translation at an Italian university. The results of the enquiry show that a clear majority of the students lament a discrepancy between the exclusiveness of the standard variety taught in lessons of German as a foreign language and the reality of spoken and written language they have experienced using Internet sources or during study stays in German speaking countries that seems definitely different to them. The desire of the students to get more familiar with substandard varieties such as colloquial speech, urban slang and youth language, that are closer to language usage of their own generation, coincides with a general necessity to take more seriously into account the incrementing role colloquial and substandard varieties play in the modern society in German speaking countries.
