Lettere dagli Antipodi: comunicazioni epistolari fantastiche fra Tiberiano e il Cymbalum mundi

Ancient culture saw the antipodes separated from us by means of impassable natural boundaries such as the Ocean and the torrid zone: the only means of communication with the possible populations down there could be an epistle carried on the wings of the wind. A brief mention by Servius of a Tiberian's passage where he speaks of an epistle sent by the Antipodians to us, and which began with the words "superior inferis salutem" (eloquent testimony to the relativity of 'high' and 'low' in a world spherical) then had a singular fortune, constituting the nucleus on which is based the possibility of an epistolary communication with the Antipodians in one of the dialogues of the Cymbalum mundi by Bonaventura Des Périers

La cultura antica vedeva gli antipodi separati da noi per mezzo di invalicabili confini naturali come l'Oceano e la zona torrida: l'unico mezzo di comunicazione con le eventuali popolazioni di laggiù poteva essere costituita da un'epistola trasportata sulle ali del vento. Un breve accenno di Servio a un passo di Tiberiano dove si parla di un'epistola inviata dagli Antipodi a noi, e che iniziava con le parole "superi inferis salutem" (eloquente testimonianza della relatività di 'alto' e 'basso' in un mondo sferico) ha avuto allora una singolare fortuna, costituendo il nucleo su cui si fonda la possibilità di una comunicazione epistolare con gli Antipodi in uno dei dialoghi del Cymbalum mundi di Bonaventura Des Périers.
