This work examines the major directions of research in the history of mathematics education. It devotes substantial attention to research methodologies and the connections between this field and other scholarly fields. The history of mathematics education is viewed here as a part of social history, but possessing its own distinctive features. A survey of the scholarly literature on the subject and the results obtained is accompanied by a discussion of what has not been done and problems that remain unsolved. The authors regard the study of the history of mathematics education as an international phenomenon to be a problem of paramount importance, including the investigation of the national and even the local in the context of what was taking place outside the borders of a single country.
