Il culto del Genius plebis a Luna: un’attestazione epigrafica

A small inscribed marble base brought to light between 1972 and 1974 at Luni, in the area of the so-called Great Temple, is one of the rare testimonies of the cult of Genius plebis, which is substantiated only by two other inscriptions, from the ancient Narona and Rome respectively. According to the various meanings assumed by the word plebs during the Imperial era, the Genius of the Luni epigraph could be as much the spirit protector of a small group, such as that represented by the less prominent members of some collegium, as that of the entire population of the colony, or its popular assembly, or the socially lower strata. In addition to the text of the inscription, the discovery location may also be meaningful, if, as has often been supposed, one of the pediment statues ot the Great Tempie indeed portrayed a Genius.

Una piccola base marmorea iscritta, ritrovata tra il 1972 e il 1974 a Luni nell'area del cosiddetto Grande Tempio, costituisce una delle rarissime attestazioni del culto del Genius plebis, noto attraverso due sole altre epigrafi, provenienti l'una dall'antica Narona e l'altra da Roma. Alla luce dei vari significati del termine plebs in epoca imperiale, il Genius lunense poteva essere tanto lo spirito protettore di un gruppo ristretto, come quello rappresentato dai membri meno eminenti di un qualche collegium quanto quello di tutta la popolazione della colonia, della sua assemblea popolare o degli strati socialmente inferiori, ai quali poteva effettivamente appartenere l'ignoto dedicante della modesta base lunense e del piccolo oggetto che doveva sorreggere. Oltre al testo dell'iscrizione, anche il luogo di ritrovamento del reperto potrebbe essere in qualche modo significativo, qualora una delle statue frontonali del Grande Tempio rappresentasse davvero un Genius, come è stato spesso ipotizzato.
