This essay aims to examine the genetically modified organisms (GMOs) issue in a comparative perspective. At first, it examines the laws of the States more favorable to GMOs (in which the principle of equivalence between GM and non-GM products is in force) and therefore the laws of the more defensive States (where the precautionary principle is in force). In this context, particular consideration is given to the regulation in the European Union and to the situations of the various member States, including, finally yet importantly, the problematic situation of Italy. The article suggests that the approach to the GMOs subject is highly affected by cultural factors. Anyway, GM foods are not good or bad in themselves, but it is necessary to verify case by case. This helps to explain why the general trend is towards a broad-based worldwide foundation for continued and diversified growth in the future of this type of crops.
