This contribution is focused on Green, Hobhouse and Dewey's respectives critiques of idealism. According to these the opposition between inner and outer life is typical of a German idealist philosophy too much inclined to justify political power especially when it tends to set aside human suffering. The essay aims to show how Green, Hobhouse and Dewey shared the opinion that German idealism is inherently authoritarian and that it flows into a concept of truth that favours institutional facets at the cost of participation and power from below.

Abstract

This contribution is focused on Green, Hobhouse and Dewey's respectives critiques of idealism.
