Acts of remembering, forgetting and misremembering are central in Beckett’s work and are closely related to the creative workings of imagination. This paper deals with the role of memory, dream and imagination in three plays - Ghost Trio, … but the clouds… and Nacht und Träume - written for television and performed between 1976 and 1982. It shows how the three works can be read as part of a triptych in which the exhaustion of verbal language gives space to a visual and highly stylized representation of the interplay between the art of memory and the memory of art, between the fragilities and failures of individual memory and the fragmentation of cultural memory.

Abstract
Acts of remembering, forgetting and misremembering are central in Beckett’s work and are closely related to the creative workings of imagination. This paper deals with the role of memory, dream and imagination in three plays - Ghost Trio, … but the clouds… and Nacht und Träume - written for television and performed between 1976 and 1982. It shows how the three works can be read as part of a triptych in which the exhaustion of verbal language gives space to a visual and highly stylized representation of the interplay between the art of memory and the memory of art, between the fragilities and failures of individual memory and the fragmentation of cultural memory.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
