Abstract

The medical gymnastics as well as the evolution of concept of gym in the ancient Rome are crucial to understand the new prominent role (from the first century B.C. onward) of physical well-being and personal hygiene in roman citizens' lives. In effect, the influence of the Greek model along with the increase in epidemic diseases and the ineffectiveness of many treatments led the Romans to give greater credit to preventive healthcare. This was certainly best exemplified by thermal ablations, yet the importance of exercise in the open air was not disregarded.
