Starting from an analysis of the various and rich donations made by foreigner rulers to the Greek sanctuaries in the Archaic age, well known thanks to the literary tradition and to the archaeological findings, the paper explores the relationship between the political power of these Oriental kings and the sacred spaces of Greek religion. The aims is to investigate the reasons why the Phrygian, Egyptian and Lydian kings are always portrayed as wealthy donors, while the Persian kings are always labelled as destroyers of sanctuaries and as authors of sacrileges against the Greek gods.

Abstract
