In the paper, structural monitoring concepts are reviewed and the corresponding capabilities in providing reliable information on the structural conditions during the lifetime of the structure are summarized. Concepts like materials degradation, obsolescence, maintenance and life-cycle cost are discussed in relation to the benefits that the presence of a permanent structural health monitoring system from the early stages of construction can provide for efficient infrastructure management in an integrated approach.
