Taking as its starting point Vladimir Vertlib’s novel Zwischenstationen (Intermediate stops), the paper, with the title (Intermediate) stops on the way to world literature, seeks to introduce the Italian reader to the phenomena of guestworker literature, migrant literature and transcultural literature in the German-speaking countries, phenomena which are already well on the way towards forming a kind of Weltliteratur (world literature) in German. It first discusses the relationship between autobiography and fiction in Zwischenstationen, pointing out that Vertlib introduces evident methods of fragmentation into the narrative flow in order to avoid his novel being read as straight autobiography. The topic of “identity”, of great importance both in Jewish culture and in the everyday life of immigrants and migrants, is addressed in the third chapter on Identità plurilocali, plurilinguistiche e pluriculturali in una nuova letteratura globale (Plurilocal, plurilinguistic and pluricultural identities in a new global literature).
