The paper aims at contributing to the debate on the future prospects of the European socio-economic model, now in the middle of a deep crisis, both in terms of economic competitiveness and social sustainability. Starting from the analysis of the main features of the capitalistic models developed in the second half of the Twentieth Century, this essay aims at highlighting the opportunities that the current of the European integration process offers to establish a new socio-economic model that is both competitive and cohesive and can contribute effectively to the definition of a new global geopolotical order.
