This is the paper that I discussed during the IX International Conference of the IPS (International Plutarch's Society) concerning the topic: Plutarch's writings: transmission, translation, reception, commentary. I analyze the references to the Plutarchean Moralia in the Chronikè Diéghesis of the Byzantine historian Niketa Choniates, in order to show how he uses them to support his political ideas. Particularly I focus on the references to the Plutarchean political areté and I highlight how Niketa uses or compels them in order to sustain his conception of political virtue.

Abstract

This is the paper that I discussed during the IX International Conference of the IPS (International Plutarch's Society) concerning the topic: Plutarch's writings: transmission, translation, reception, commentary. I analyze the references to the Plutarchean Moralia in the Chronikè Diéghesis of the Byzantine historian Niketa Choniates, in order to show how he uses them to support his political ideas. Particularly I focus on the references to the Plutarchean political areté and I highlight how Niketa uses or compels them in order to sustain his conception of political virtue.
