This paper focuses on the role of epistemic and non-epistemic values in both natural and social sciences. The difference between these values is clarified, and an argument in favor of the integration of non-epistemic values into the scientific enterprise is examined and critiqued. We argue for the need to maintain a plausible distinction between the context of discovery, which is merely descriptive, and the context of justification, which is intrinsically normative. According to us, the role of non-epistemic values is certainly important, but non-epistemic values should be confined to the former context.

Abstract

This paper focuses on the role of epistemic and non-epistemic values in both natural and social sciences. The difference between these values is clarified, and an argument in favor of the integration of non-epistemic values into the scientific enterprise is examined and critiqued. We argue for the need to maintain a plausible distinction between the context of discovery, which is merely descriptive, and the context of justification, which is intrinsically normative. According to us, the role of non-epistemic values is certainly important, but non-epistemic values should be confined to the former context.
