The isothermal sections at 500°C of several R-Ni-Al ternary systems have been determined mainly by using different micrographic techniques. New ternary phases (SmNiAl4, SmNiAl3 and SmNi2Al3) have been discovered and their crystal structures have been determined for the Sm-Ni-Al system. The R4Ni6Al23 phase and its role in phase equilibria ave been highlighted.

Abstract
