supply of this kind of energy largely depends on its ubiquitous transmission and distribution. However, the architecture of current power grids was designed forty years ago or even more, when generation by few large oligopolistic utilities was mostly based on fossil fuels. Today, the awareness of finite availability of fossil resources, the attention to environmental impact and pollution and the trend towards liberalization and deregulation are bringing new models for the energy market and the electrical grid, which are expected to become ever more intelligent and autonomic infrastructures, largely relying on ICT technologies. We try to fill the gap in knowledge about this evolution towards smart grids, in order to outline new challenges and opportunities for ICT.

Abstract

supply of this kind of energy largely depends on its ubiquitous transmission and distribution.
