The paper aims to compare the two courts of the popes (in Rome) and of the Montefeltro dynasty (in Urbino) in the Renaissance, taking into account a number of revealing factors at the turn of the fifteenth and sixteenth century: the machinery of court offices, the spatial organization of the "royal" residences of the sovereigns, the urban distribution of the dwellings of courtiers in Urbino and of cardinals in Rome.
