Abstract

The text tells of “ecological conversion" as the only way out. A spiritual change of lifestyle, the way we work and relate with others and with "things". A change of perspective that invests strongly also the design academic discipline, as well as an obsolete concept of a tool to support the consumerism, and which has as its goal the reconstruction of a material culture adapted to the situation of our time. The material culture of the shared pre-industrial world was made up of items, products, materials, ritual of which it is possible to know the origin and principally the fate. All of them intellectually dominated a world of relationships, objects, and landscapes. This type of approach has been lost with the industrial civilization, but it has been possible to replace it with an adequate culture of the advanced technologies. It is possible now recover and rebuild the material life cycle of what we use daily? It is possible to integrate the sharing based on network systems, to optimize processes? It is possible to rethink design, in order to consider items not as fixed entities, but as steps in a process that has to be reconstructed in its identity?
