Abstract: The paper presents the concept design of a high speed commercial vessel based on the trimaran configuration. The adopted solution represents an interesting and promising alternative to the existing and recently built monohull or catamaran ferries. The study has been focused on the application of the trimaran to the case of ro/ro-pax fast ferries suitable for service in the Mediterranean Sea. The target mission profile and carrying capacity requirements have been chosen as a result of a market study of the Mediterranean waterborne transportation system. The concept design has been defined in all of its main aspects: hull forms and positions, general arrangements, propulsion system choice and optimisation, weight estimation and stability requirements verification, structural strength analysis, in particular as regards the connections between outriggers and main hull.
