Abstract: This work is part of a research, currently in progress, whose aim is to design RO-RO/Pax ferries and Passenger ships that minimize the impact on the environment during the normal operation and in case of accident. Some critical environmental issues have been identified and counter measures proposed. Moreover the evaluation of the impact that the application of the environmental class notation can induce on the ship design has been assessed. To achieve this, three RO-RO/Pax and a Passenger ship have been analysed and the Rules for the GREEN STAR Class Notation have been applied to them. Two important margins of improvement of the rules have been analysed and discussed: the ‘energetic issue’ and the adoption of an ‘improving strategy’.
