Abstract: In the paper the dynamic performance analysis of a gas turbine/waterjet propulsion system for a fast trimaran ferry is presented and discussed. The adopted technique is the computer simulation, for which a complex mathematical model, characterised by a modular arrangement, has been suitably developed. The model consists of several sub-models or modules, concerning the different elements of the propulsion chain (gas turbine, waterjet, hull resistance, telegraph, engine governor, etc.), linked together according to a logical scheme. The level of confidence of the model is guaranteed by the sub-models validation presented in previous papers and, for what concerns the waterjet, in this paper as comparison of simulated results with data provided by the manufacturer. The presented results, relative to acceleration manoeuvres, show the variation of the main parameters relative to the propulsion system in both the time domain and with reference to the performance maps of the main plant components (waterjet, gas turbine, compressor). The analysis of the results has put into evidence the influence of the different parameters involved and, above all, has allowed to identify the most critical factors affecting the trimaran propulsion plant performance in transient conditions, such as, for instance, the manoeuvre rapidity, the waterjet pump cavitation, the gas turbine limit temperatures, the compressor surge.
