Through a detailed analysis of the entries (more than 90), devoted to ancient Lydia in the Byzantine Suda Lexicon, the essay proposes some general remarks about the interest which the Anatolian region (its history, characters, traditions and folklore) raised in the Byzantine age, and in particular offers a close examination of the entry devoted to the ancient historian Xanthus the Lydian, useful to identify the main compositional-strata. The research allows on one side to identify the various ways and the different reasons why the evidence about the oldest historian of Lydia were preserved, and on the other side, to shed new light on some peculiarities of the composition of Suda’s bio-bibliographical entries.

Abstract
Through a detailed analysis of the entries (more than 90), devoted to ancient Lydia in the Byzantine Suda Lexicon, the essay proposes some general remarks about the interest which the Anatolian region (its history, characters, traditions and folklore) raised in the Byzantine age, and in particular offers a close examination of the entry devoted to the ancient historian Xanthus the Lydian, useful to identify the main compositional-strata. The research allows on one side to identify the various ways and the different reasons why the evidence about the oldest historian of Lydia were preserved, and on the other side, to shed new light on some peculiarities of the composition of Suda’s bio-bibliographical entries.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
