Arturo Issel between Archaeology, Palaeontology and Geology: a preliminary analysis of the Issel Bequest in the Archive of the Istituto Mazziniano A preliminary analysis of his letters, manuscripts, university lessons and conferences, notes and early versions of his major works make it possible to make several inferences on the life, methods and national and international relationships of Arturo Issel, one of the major Ligurian cultural figures of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the age of encyclopaedism and positivism. In particular, the analysis of certain documents makes it possible to underline the importance of his categorisations and choices in the formation of the palaethnological, palaeontological and geological collections of the city of Genoa and to gain new insights into the impact of the interests of this scholar on the interpretation and appreciation of Ligurian area.
