Abstract

Greek Literature supplied us with a lot of prototypes, histories that tell our histories. They were men, quite always men, expecially in XX century, who wrote a remake of Medea or Antigone or other ancient heroines. There is only one protagonist for which modern heritage has many and many women as authors of remakes in all the world, and this is Phaedra. This book shows a sort of “pink line” in Phaedra’s heritage : from Willa Cather and Margaret Sackville until Marina Cvetaeva, Marguerite Yourcenar, Sarah Kane and Susan Yankovitz . One of the questions is if anything changes if the hand that writes is a woman’s. hand. , if classical heritage ends in women’s hands. In the case of Phaedra, women’s remakes make Hyppolitus love Phaedra or absolve her for her revenge.
