The book focuses on the political class of decentralized institutions set up in Italian Communes, according to Law 278/76. In particular, it shows the results of a quantitative research carried out in 2010 on a sample of 144 out of a population of 216 persons elected in these institutions in the Commune of Genoa (pop. about 610,000), stratified by three variables: Municipality, list of election, and gender. The study offers at first a description of these local politicians, starting from their socio-graphic characters. Other data are related to their membership and leadership in political parties, associations, trade unions and local pressure groups, as well as their political past experience and current activity. A final set of data is related to their attitudes towards the output of the decentralization system in general and the activity of their Municipality in particular. Later, two bivaried analysis are provided: the first using the variable “coalition of election” (two modalities: “centre-left” and “centre-right”), the second using the variable: “role in the institution” (two modalities: “member of the municipal board”, as either president or assessor, and “councillor”).
