The categories suggested by International Union of Nature Conservation as employed in environmental conservation and planning are briefly discussed. A way out of the previous geographical dichotomy Man/Nature have been suggested with the peculiar development of the historical approach or historical ecology in UK research since 1970's. The environmental significances of local practices of resources activation, use and reproduction are exemplified in the South European context.
