This book chapter focuses on the evolving role of port State control and jurisdiction in international marine environmental law. After a description of the basic provisions on port States contained in the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, due attention is paid to the use of Memoranda of Understanding on Port State Control, such as the 1992 Paris MoU and to the ever increasing relevance of EU law instruments in this field. The point is made, in particular, that the incorporation of PSC standards into European legislation is an important tool to ensure compliance with international marine environmental obligations of Member States.
