In this paper I present some aspects of my research which seem to me particularly linked to the classroom practice. As a starting point I take the concept of ‘understanding mathematics’ that I consider central in my work. I devote part of my paper to a summary of the opinions about this concept by some important authors, since they have been the starting point for both my theoretical and practical work.
