Through extensive and unpublished archival research, the thesis analyses the various historical, geographical, technological, economic and artistic factors that transformed Genoa into the beating heart of the international market for marble in the Early Modern period. After considering the influx of masons of Lombard and Swiss origin into the city, where they were so well integrated that they underwent a process of ‘naturalisation’ and were regarded as Genoese, the thesis deals with the birth and development of their guild, as well as their relations with other broader artistic production in the broader artistic production in the city and the artistic production. It sketches the historical profile of the individuals who had intense relations with Genoese marble workers: patrons of boats, merchants, men of finance and quarrymen who stood alongside the skilled stone masons who exported their entrepreneurial, technical and artistic skills elsewhere. This does not only highlight the contribution made by Genoese marble workers to the history of Italian and European art between the 16th and 18th centuries but, extending the research to the entire Mediterranean basin, it also presents a novel image of Genoa as a Republic founded on marble.

Abstract
This does not only highlight the contribution made by Genoese marble workers to the history of Italian and European art between the 16th and 18th centuries but, extending the research to the entire Mediterranean basin, it also presents a novel image of Genoa as a Republic founded on marble.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
