This thesis investigates the presence and nature of political critique in design education in Italy, examining the dualism between the "inside out" and "outside in" critical approaches identified in the literature on design pedagogy. While the "inside out" critique views design as a tool for political criticism, the "outside in" approach scrutinizes design as an object of political and critical examination. The research explores how these categorizations manifest in Italian academic contexts, with particular attention to educational content, pedagogical methods, and research. Through an analysis of Italian design universities, the thesis highlights a predominant presence of "inside out" approaches and, conversely, a lack of "outside in" critique. It thus underscores the need for change in Italian design education to incorporate a "design politics" perspective, starting from a situated knowledge concept that builds on the ideas of Pluriversal and Otherwise design and the methods of critical and feminist pedagogy. The study concludes by proposing a series of "minor gestures" that emphasize the use of representation, in its various meanings, as a means to initiate this change, suggesting a pedagogical transformation in Italian academic design contexts that embraces both theory and practice.

Abstract
The study concludes by proposing a series of "minor gestures" that emphasize the use of representation, in its various meanings, as a means to initiate this change, suggesting a pedagogical transformation in Italian academic design contexts that embraces both theory and practice.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
